The “Middle Ages”

No, I probably won’t end up changing everyone else’s usage — but I can at least explain my own.

What People Normally Mean

Origins of the “Middle Ages”

Europe is Part of Afro-Eurasia

<ILLA IANA> — the island of Java on the seventh panel of Cresques Abraham’s Catalan Atlas (Mallorca, 1375). The multicoloured blobs to the right represent other Indonesian islands, and the ship to the left is an early image of a junk (known on the map as <inchi>, a copying error for <jũchi>).

Not-Afro-Eurasia

The Columbian Exchange

Why Use “Medieval”?

Here’s a little table simplifying the terminology I propose. I’m much less interested here in the period after 1492 CE.

The Indian Ocean and the Monsoons

The closest relatives of Malagasy, the language (really several closely related dialects) of Madagascar, are to be found in Borneo, about 7,000 kilometres away.

Concluding Remarks

The medieval world geographically circumscribed.
